MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Questions are being raised as to how UConn students are supposed to move on after a homicide occurred on campus in what was supposed to be one of the safest spots on campus, the student union. It’s a disturbing event even for students who were not eyewitnesses, including parents.Clinical psychologist Dr. Robert Reynolds knows what the students at UConn are going through. His office is near the Wesleyan University campus where, in May, a student was shot and killed inside of a campus bookstore.Reynolds said he treated a handful of Wesleyan students, including one who was inside of the bookstore during the shooting.Reynolds said, “Of course there was nothing he could have done but he needed to talk that through and realize this was something that was beyond his control.”Reynolds said that even though the Wesleyan shooting happened on campus he’s concerned that the UConn stabbing death could have greater ramifications because it happened in front of so many students who were attending the dance at the student union.Reynolds said, “The football coach set a very good example for those players. He basically let them know that it was ok to have feelings and he displayed those feelings in public. And this is important for athletes in particular who may take a macho view on things.”Reynolds also said that even UConn students who didn’t know Jasper Howard, and students who were not at the dance where the stabbing happened and even parents of UConn students could all be experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He said that he wanted parents, college roommates and professors to know the signs of PTSD so they can encourage a student who may be experiencing it to get help.
