Holes Found In Surface Of Ansonia Bridge

Emergency Work Closes Route 334

Route 334 was closed in both directions in Ansonia Thursday afternoon after holes were found in the surface of the Maple Street Bridge, the mayor's office said.

All lanes of the roadway were closed between Route 115 and Olson Drive before noon.

Department of Transportation officials estimated that five to six hours were needed to reopen the road.

The Department of Transportation said that there were two different holes. The first hole is 2 feet wide at the top and only 3 inches wide at the bottom, and the second is only about 6 inches wide at the top and 1 inch wide at the bottom.

The Department of Transportation stressed that the structure of the bridge itself was safe. However, the holes needed to be fixed because if a vehicle drove over one of them, damage could occur to the vehicle.
