ELLINGTON, Conn. -- Voters in Ellington will be weighing in on a proposal to purchase 99 acres of open space when they head to the polls on Tuesday.People seem to agree that the view from Manoka Hill Recreation Area in Ellington is spectacular. On Tuesday, voters will decide on the price tag for this land -- just over $1.7 million spread over 20 years.Ellington First Selectman Michael Stupinski said, “People get very concerned because of the current economy. We’re looking considerably beyond that and I think the number that’s been worked out for what this is going to be is about $23 a person, or household a year.”The property sits adjacent to a state park and the plan is to link up the walking trails. The First Selectman is urging residents to consider the long range value of the plan.Stupinski said, “This is forever because, let’s face it, if we don’t purchase this, and somebody purchases it and develops it and puts houses on it, that’s forever. We’ve lost a golden opportunity. There’s no time like the present for this.”
