NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Pedestrians in New Haven have been complaining for years about the area around North Frontage Road and College Street. Now, they’re more frustrated than ever with the new cancer opening and no changes in safety. On the corner of North Frontage and College streets, pedestrians cross at their own risk. Cathy Schufro walks the area every day. Schufro said, “I wait for a real lull then make eye contact with the drivers.”All of the intersections along the stretch of road near the hospital is difficult to cross. In fact, there have been several deadly crashes involving pedestrians. Currently, there are no pedestrian signals to push that would stop cars in all four directions. The city told Channel 3 Eyewitness News that new traffic signals are in the works but only 8 have been approved. The remaining four are slated to get approval later this month, but until that happens Schufro said she will continue to cross with care.
