Suspect Apprehended After Foot Chase, Police Say

HARTFORD, Conn. -- An officer was shot twice during a struggle with a suspect in the north end of Hartford early Wednesday morning, police said.Police said rookie Officer Michael Bodner was shot in the area of Tower Avenue and Salisbury Street just before 1 a.m. after attempting to question a suspect. Police said officers stopped Dwayne Powell for questioning, but he immediately fled.One of the officers began chasing Powell, who they said produced a gun and shot the officer two times after a brief struggle. Police said the officer was shot once in the leg and once in the arm. They said another officer fired at the suspect, but missed.Police said Powell fled, but was quickly found by other officers.Hartford school officials said that because of the investigation, students who live in the four-block area of the investigation would not be picked up for school Wednesday.The schools affected are Bulkeley High, Weaver High, Simpson Waverly Elementary and Rawson Elementary schools.Bodner was transported to St. Francis Hospital. He was released on Monday afternoon.Powell was being held on $3 million bond. He was charged with attempted murder, assault, assault on a police officer and drug possession.
