EAST HAVEN, Conn. -- An 83-year-old man died after being struck by a car in East Haven Thursday night.

Police said Archangelo Iovanne, of East Haven, was hit by a Jeep Grand Cherokee on Main Street at about 10 p.m.

Police said the Jeep was traveling westbound on Main Street when it hit Iovanne near Park Street. They said the driver, identified as Joseph Bertier, 36, of East Haven, pulled over after realizing he struck Iovanne. The driver notified an officer who was in the parking lot of a Walgreens Pharmacy.

Several people stopped to help Iovanne, who was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The incident remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed.
