Investigators Say Driver Likely Intoxicated

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. -- A man is in custody and rescuers are searching the Connecticut River for a 50-year-old man after a van went into the river Sunday morning.East Hartford police got a call at 6:24 a.m. about a vehicle in the water at a boat launch in East Hartford, dispatchers said. East Hartford police, fire rescue crews and a state police dive team were at the scene.One man was taken into custody. That man has not been cooperative with investigators and has changed his story, police said.Police believe that the 50-year-old driver may have been intoxicated and drove into the water. His window was found open. Officials said the operation had changed from a rescue to a recovery effort as dive teams search the river. They were preparing to use sonar technology Sunday morning.Crews were preparing to pull the van out of the water Sunday morning.At one point, it was believed that a 4-year-old might have been in the vehicle.
