LEBANON, Conn. -- It’s an inevitable problem; Cemeteries running out of space.A small town in Easter Connecticut is planning for its future, looking for new cemetery land. What’s available now is dwindling and could be gone within five years.Lebanon has 19 small burial sites, most of which are filled to capacity. One of Lebanon’s oldest cemeteries, Liberty Hill, is nearly full, but still may be the town’s best option for future expansion.Sexton of Cemeteries Marcia Shuett said, “This town has an ordinance that if you’re born here, lived here, you can buy a plot in this town.”Only about 60 plots remain available. On average, local leaders said that’s a lifespan of five years. One option is to negotiate for abutting property that’s landlocked.“I’m looking at about a 47 acre piece which would mean we’d have to put in some roadway with gravel to get to it, but it’s the best location,” Shuett said.Town leaders have been working for decades on adding cemetery space. It seemed as if plots would always be available. Now, time is running out.
