UPDATED: 10:44 pm EST December 30, 2009

A man who Stamford police had subdued with a Taser stun gun on Wednesday died.

Stamford police said they were called at about 11:15 a.m. to a residence at 23 Lafayette Street to deal with an unruly resident. The man did not comply with police orders and was aggressive, police said. Police used pepper spray on the man, but he continued to be combative, police said.

An officer used the Taser on the man and handcuffs were placed on him. He then suffered "medical distress," police said. Emergency medical crews were called and he was taken to Stamford Hospital and was shortly thereafter pronounced dead, police said.

The man's name was not released.

Stamford's police chief and State Attorney David Kane asked the Connecticut State Police Western District Major Crime Squad to conduct an investigation.
