HARTFORD, Conn. -- There is growing concern over a translation program losing its funding in Hartford. The Hispanic Health Council said more and more woman need the services they provide when it comes to dealing with cancer.Every week, women from all over Hartford and all over Latin America gather to support one another inside 175 Main St. in Hartford. On Thursday, the women were cutting up pictures of food high in fat. That way, one of them who has stomach cancer knows what to eat. Many of the women have a hard time speaking and understanding English.Jeannette DeJesus, of the Hispanic Health Council said, "The women that come to us come with lots of needs; transportation translation help and lots of other needs."Gloria Pagan said without them, she wouldn't know what to do. She came from Puerto Rico five months ago, has advanced breast cancer and thanks to the health council, has been able to keep up on her treatment. She said through the group meetings, she has found some comfort in knowing she is not the one dealing with cancer. The problem is, the Hispanic Health Council, which runs the program is running out of money, and only one person is on staff to deal with all the women who need a lot of help.Until now, the program has been running simply on small grants from organizations like Susan G. Komen and the American Cancer Society, but because more and more women are getting diagnosed and referred to them, the workload is getting larger while the funding is not.The hope is that more grants and more donations can help keep the program running and help keep these women ahead of the fight against cancer.
