MIDDLETOWN, Conn -- Bridges within a half-mile radius of the Kleen Energy power plant in Middletown are being evaluated for inspection in the wake of Sunday’s explosion, Department of Transportation officials said.ConnDOT officials said that they are making a list of all bridges within a half-mile radius of the explosion site to determine whether any of them need to be inspected. The department said it expects few, if any of the bridges to require inspection. Officials said if any do need to be inspected, they expect the damage to be minimal and for no safety threats to be posed. From the list, ConnDOT officials said they will look at safety records, age and materials used in the construction of the bridges.Officials said that modern bridges are “over built” for their jobs and that they are making the list out of an over abundance of caution. The blast at the plant killed five and was felt as far away as Naugatuck. The windows of several homes in neighboring Portland were blown out in the blast.
