The UConn women's basketball team won the Big East championships Tuesday night with a 60-32 win over West Virginia in the finals.

Monday proved a record-breaking night for the University of Connecticut women's basketball team. The lady Huskies achieved 71 consecutive wins. Tuesday marked the Huskies' 72nd win.

"I think I speak for the state when I say I couldn't be prouder," said fan Keith Taylor.

Taylor said he is logging his 39th year as a UConn fan and said he's thrilled to be able to witness the women breaking yet another NCAA record.

"Tremendous effort by our women," he said. "They showed tremendous poise, tremendous composure down the stretch to pull away from Notre Dame."

The tournament is proving not only a big win for the team, but for fans and local businesses. The game was shown exclusively on ESPN U and many fans who didn't make it into the XL Center packed downtown bars and restaurants to watch on the big screen.

"The list was really long for tickets to get in the lottery, even at the med school where we're working all the time, we still wanted to get tickets," said UConn medical student Nikki Goulet, who enjoyed the game at City Steam.

Other fans ventured to Vaughn's Public House, where managers said it's been a great weekend downtown.

"I think it's an asset to downtown Hartford that we have the Big East women's competition downtown because it's like the more people downtown, the better it is for Hartford," said Iris McNamara of Vaughan's.
