Smith's Family Casts Doubt On Wife

Man Disappeared From Cruise One Year Ago

One year has passed since Connecticut-native George Smith IV vanished while on his honeymoon cruise.

Now, his parents have raised questions about Smith's newlywed wife, Jennifer Hagel-Smith.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Kara Sundlun said the lives of a beautiful young Connecticut couple shattered after a night of heavy drinking aboard the Royal Caribbean's Brilliance of the Seas on July 5, 2005.

When Smith disappeared, blood was found on the canopy beneath his ninth-floor cabin, but his body was never recovered.

There were reports of a fight between the couple, but Hagel-Smith claimed she doesn't remember anything about that night.

Drew Lufkin, Smith's best friend and groomsman, spoke out for the first time in an interview with Inside Edition.

Lufkin told the TV show that when he asked Hagel-Smith where she was, she replied, "I was passed out. I don't remember."

"I wish that she did, honestly, I wish that she did," Lufkin added.

Smith's parents said they think the bride has something to hide.

"He would have been a loyal father and husband to Jennifer Hagel for many years, and, unfortunately, I am absolutely convinced that he was betrayed," said Smith's mother, Maureen Smith.

Smith's parents said they believe Hagel-Smith settled her lawsuit last week against Royal Caribbean because she has something to hide. They have since filed their own lawsuit against the cruise liner.

Hagel-Smith issued a statement Wednesday, saying everyone grieves differently.

"There are truly no words to describe the pain and suffering. George would be proud of the accomplishments achieved ... as well as the positive cruise industry changes that are currently being adopted."

U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, R-District 4, has proposed a new law that would require cruise liners report crimes and missing Americans to the FBI within four hours or face steep fines.

Hagel-Smith also announced Wednesday that she is making a donation in the name of George Smith to forensics expert Dr. Henry Lee's forensic science institute at the University of New Haven.
