HARTFORD, Conn. -- The widow of one of the victims of last year's Avon Mountain crash is trying to start a special interest group to focus on making improvements to the state's most dangerous roads.Ellen Stotler's husband, Chip Stotler, was one of four people killed at the base of Avon Mountain last July when the driver of a dump truck lost control and slammed into numerous cars.Stotler has since been left with five young children and is now trying to make sure that what happened to her husband doesn't happen to anyone else.Since the crash, the state has put up signs and has added shoulders, but Stotler's attorney, Mike Stratton, said this does nothing to prevent a similar tragedy."Nothing has been done to Route 44 to prevent trucks from careening down … it's reprehensible," Stratton said.Stotler and her lawyer believe Route 44 needs a runaway truck ramp. They claim it is one of the state's most dangerous roads. Another road they cite as dangerous is Route 34 in New Haven where seven people were killed in six months.Stotler also blames the state for not cracking down on companies whose trucks are not safe enough to be on the roads. The driver of the truck involved in the Avon Mountain crash and owner of American Crushing and Recycling, David Wilcox, was in court this week facing manslaughter charges. His trucks had multiple mechanical problems."I am angry what he did and that he chose to operate his company like that but I am also angry with the state for letting him continue for so many years," Stotler said.Route 44 in Avon Route 6 in Bolton and Columbia Route 15 in Greenwich Interstate 95 in Darien Route 9 in Haddam and Middletown Route 69 in Woodbridge and Bethany Route 66 in Middletown Route 8 in Torrington and Winchester Stay with WFSB.com and Channel 3 Eyewitness News for the latest news updates.
