12-Year-Old Saves Neighbors From Fire

Fire Damages Meriden Building

POSTED: 9:33 pm EDT May 9, 2008

A 12-year-old girl is being credited with alerting residents of a Meriden home of a fire.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Leon Collins reported that the girl saw flames in the Bunker Avenue home and pulled the building's call box to alert the fire department.

Officials said the girl then ran back inside and began banging on apartment doors to alert neighbors of the fire.

Residents called the girl's actions heroic.

The building was heavily damaged in the fire.

Collins reported that the city is slated to remove all of the call boxes from buildings in the city because the majority of the calls are false alarms.
