A Windsor Locks man is accused of assaulting his 3-year-old child.

Daniel St. Hilaire, 25, was arrested on Friday on charges of assault, reckless endangerment, risk of injury to a minor and disorderly conduct.

Prosecutors said St. Hilaire dropped the boy far enough that the child's collarbone was broken.

Police said the child suffered a cut to his face, a handprint on his buttocks 11 hours after being spanked and the broken collarbone.

"Let's make no mistake, these are allegations of a beating of a child -- a wholesale beating," said assistant state's attorney Chris Parakilas.

Prosecutors said that the assault occurred as St. Hilaire and his wife were preparing their children to leave their home on Friday morning.

The couple has six children, four of which are from previous relationships, and police said investigators used their accounts of what happened to make an arrest.

St. Hilaire's attorney claimed that there were inconsistencies in what the children said.

"Sometimes things happen," said defense attorney David Kelly. "With six children in the house that can cause injury. There's nothing in this case at this point in time that would indicate that my client caused these injuries."

The probable cause documents say that the Department of Children and Families and police were tipped off to the boy's injuries after the mother showed up with him in Hartford Court on an unrelated matter.

The marshal noticed the boy looked like he was in pain, according to court documents.

St. Hilaire was released on bond on Monday.
