A death-row prisoner was injured in an altercation at Northern Correctional Institution in Somers on Wednesday.

The inmate was transported to Johnson & Memorial Hospital after the assault, according to state police.

Johnson & Memorial Hospital told Eyewitness News that it was treating Russell Peeler for head injuries.

The altercation happened before 2 p.m.

The Department of Corrections said that no staff members were injured during the fight and said death row had been secured by 3 p.m.

Somer's First Selectman told Eyewitness News that he did not receive a call that the prison was in lockdown.

Troop C said it was providing escort service to the hospital.

The attack comes the day after a Kevin Cales, a prisoner at McDougal-Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield was fatally beaten by a fellow prisoner.

The hospital listed Peeler in fair condition.

Peeler was sent to death row after being convicted of ordering the killings of an 8-year-old boy and the boy's mother in 1999.
