Hospital: Russell Peeler Being Treated For Head Injuries

SOMERS, Conn. -- A death-row prisoner was injured in an altercation at Northern Correctional Institution in Somers on Wednesday.The inmate was transported to Johnson & Memorial Hospital after the assault, according to state police.Johnson & Memorial Hospital told Eyewitness News that it was treating Russell Peeler for head injuries.The altercation happened before 2 p.m.
The Department of Corrections said that no staff members were injured during the fight and said death row had been secured by 3 p.m.Somer's First Selectman told Eyewitness News that he did not receive a call that the prison was in lockdown.Troop C said it was providing escort service to the hospital.The attack comes the day after a Kevin Cales, a prisoner at McDougal-Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield was fatally beaten by a fellow prisoner.The hospital listed Peeler in fair condition.Peeler was sent to death row after being convicted of ordering the killings of an 8-year-old boy and the boy's mother in 1999.Refresh this page and watch Eyewitness News for updates to this developing story.
