NHL Game Summary - St. Louis At Detroit

POSTED: 12:47 am EST February 3, 2007

(Sports Network) - Kris Draper's third period short-handed goal proved to be the game-winner as Detroit beat St. Louis, 5-3, to extend its home-winning streak to 10 games.

Henrik Zetterberg had a four-point night with a goal and three assists while Tomas Holmstrom posted two goals and an assist for the Red Wings, who are an impressive 19-3-3 at Joe Louis Arena this season.

Daniel Cleary also scored, Nicklas Lidstrom had three assists and Dominik Hasek finished with 24 saves for Detroit, which has won three straight overall.

Lee Stempniak, Ryan Johnson and Keith Tkachuk each scored and Manny Legace gave up four goals on 28 shots for the Blues, who have lost three straight.

With the score knotted at 3-3 and St. Louis on the power play, Lidstrom and Draper broke out on a 2-on-1 break. Lidstrom sent a pass across ice, off Stempniak and into mid-air, where Draper stuffed it home to give Detroit the lead with 6:29 left in the third.

"I was kidding with Nick (Lidstrom) on the bench, asking if he thought it was going in if I didn't touch it," said Draper. "He said it doesn't matter, you have to make 100 percent sure it's going in."

The Blues pulled Legace late for an extra attacker, but Cleary netted the empty-netter to ice the game.

"This was a winnable game for us," said Tkachuk. "Any time you go into the third period with this team tied, you're in a good position. We know how tough it is to win here."

The game started off with a bang as both teams struck for a goal in the first 1:06 of the opening period.

Just 33 seconds into the game, Zetterberg skated in on the St. Louis net before backhanding a shot top-shelf on Legace. 33 seconds later, Stempniak beat Hasek with a wrister to even the score.

Then, just under eight minutes into the second period, Johnson stormed in on the Red Wings' net with the puck and went crashing into Hasek, sending the Detroit netminder sprawling on the ice.

Dallas Drake was there to stuff home the rebound, but the goal was disallowed as Johnson was called for goaltender interference. Detroit made St. Louis pay on the ensuing power play when Holmstrom redirected Lidstrom's shot from the point past Legace to give Detroit a 2-1 lead.

Johnson atoned for his mistake with 5:16 left in the second and the Red Wings on another power play. Drake, along the right boards, chipped the puck into the slot for Johnson. Hasek came way out of his crease to break up the play but the move backfired as Johnson poked the puck pass Hasek to tie the game at 2-2.

Holmstrom's second goal of the game 7:42 into the final period put Detroit back in front, but just over two minutes later Tkachuk redirected Dennis Wideman's shot from the blueline past Hasek to even the score.

Game Notes:

Detroit went 1-for-5 on the power play, while St. Louis squandered six chances with the man-advantage, including four in the second period...The Blues had posted a 5-0-1 record in their last six away games.
