Tortorella, Gordon Named USA Olympic Assistants

POSTED: 1:04 pm EDT June 29, 2009

(Sports Network) - John Tortorella and Scott Gordon have been named assistant coaches for the United States' men's Olympic hockey team.

Tortorella, the head coach of the New York Rangers, and Gordon, the head coach of the New York Islanders, will work behind the bench for the 2010 Vancouver Games with Toronto's Ron Wilson, who was named Team USA's head coach in April.

Both Tortorella and Gordon have coaching experience with USA Hockey.

Tortorella was the head coach for Team USA at the 2008 World Championship and was an assistant at the 2005 Worlds. Gordon was an assistant for the Americans at this year's World Championship.

In addition, USA Hockey announced its support staff for the Olympic hockey team, including equipment managers Mike Aldrich and Derek Settlemyre; video coordinator Brad Aldrich; trainers Stan Wong and Ray Tufts; physician Dr. Michael Stuart; massage therapist Bruce Lifrieri; and communications contacts Dave Fischer and Gerry Helper.

Tortorella was named Rangers head coach on February 23 and guided the club to the Stanley Cup playoffs, losing in the first round to Washington. The Boston native previously spent six seasons as head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, leading the team to its first Stanley Cup championship in the spring of 2004.

Gordon, a member of Team USA at the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, just completed his first season with the Islanders. The Massachusetts native also spent five seasons as head coach of the AHL's Providence Bruins.
