Rell Asks DCP To Monitor For Gouging After Ike

Gov. Jodi Rell announced Saturday that she has directed state consumer protection officials to monitor the effects of Hurricane Ike on gas prices over the next several days in order to prevent potential price gouging.

On Friday, major refineries in the Gulf either closed or slowed production. Wholesale gasoline prices on the Gulf Coast averaged around $4.85 a gallon.

"We will be watching the prices at the pumps very closely to make sure consumers are protected," Rell said. "We are sending a clear message to gasoline retailers and station owners. It is against the law to take advantage of a natural disaster by hiking prices. No one will be allowed to use this hurricane to increase their profits."

Rell warned that unwarranted price spikes would be found, exposed and prosecuted.

A gas gouging prevention hot line has been set up so that consumers can report retailers and incidents for review. Consumers are encouraged to call 800-842-2649.
