Torrington Dog Park Plans On Hold

Residents Complain About Current Site; City To Help Find Another Site

POSTED: 1:47 pm EDT April 16, 2008

It seems Torrington officials cannot agree on where to put a proposed dog park.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Hena Daniels reported no one could agree on where to put the park, so the mayor set the plan aside.

According to his owner, 4-year-old Max has been gearing up to run freely and make some friends in a brand new, fenced-in 2-acre dog park that was set to open this week.

But, for now, the only place the yellow lab will be playing off a leash is in his own back yard after some neighbors balked at the plans.

"The city had no opposition but the community of Drakewell did," said Max's owner, identified as Sue.

Dog owners who founded a group called Bark and Rec two years ago convinced the city's Park and Recreation officials to build a dog park for the 2,000 dog owners in Torrington who have said their pooches have nowhere to play.

"Most people don't know what a dog park is. They have vision of fights and feces. We are not that kind of group," Sue said.

The group received approval from the city and installed a $20,000 fence and turned a baseball park into a dog park.

Then, the city received complaints from angry residents like Roberta Foster who said the park is for children, not for pets.

"If you put some dogs together, some will be aggressive," Flock said.

During a packed meeting filled with people opposing the park, Flock even threatened to shoot a dog if he came on her property, Daniels said.

"All I said was if a dog jumped over and the fence and threatened one of our animals, I would defend my animals," Flock said.

"Shoot them?" Daniels asked.

"Yes," Flock said.

"You don't think that's a little harsh?" Daniels asked.

"No," Flock said.

Bark and Rec members said the group is optimistic and that the city has agreed to help them look for a new site.

Daniels reported the $20,000 fence will be put in storage until the new dog park is built.
