CAMPAIGN 2007: RACE FOR MAYOR

Gonzalez To Fight To Get On Primary Ballot

State Representative To Take Case To Court

POSTED: 6:19 pm EDT August 14, 2007

Hartford mayoral candidate Minnie Gonzalez told Eyewitness News that she will get herself on the primary ballot, even if it means taking her case to court.

Gonzalez collected enough signatures to get her name on the Democratic primary ballot, but an obscure law threw out the majority of the signatures.

The registrar of voters threw out hundreds of signatures collected for Gonzales because volunteers who collected them were also collecting signatures for other candidates at the same time -- which is not allowed.

Gonzalez said Tuesday that she didn't know about the 30-year-old law that took her out of the primary.

"I am disappointed, I really believe it's not fair," Gonzalez said.

She said that if she can't get into the primary, she will have to run as an independent against incumbent Mayor Eddie Perez in November. She said to do that, she'll have to start collecting signatures again.

"I am ready and I will come back in November stronger than ever," she said. "I think this and what's going on will make me stronger."

I. Charles Mathews also was tripped up by the same rule and had his petition thrown out. However, Mathews gathered enough other signatures to keep him in the race.
