Gov. M. Jodi Rell said she wants legislative leaders to come to her residence Sunday to hammer out a budget deal.

Even though Connecticut's fiscal year ends Tuesday, she said there's still a chance for an agreement to be reached.

Rell appeared Saturday at the home of a Newington family and signed her veto of the legislative Democrats' two-year budget proposal, which was approved Friday.

“While I do not yet have the budget the Democrats passed yesterday, it is no secret I find it woefully inadequate,” Rell said. “So I have prepared a veto message … as soon as the bill hits my desk, I will put a date on the veto letter and send the bill back.”

Rell said she'll date the veto immediately when the bill hits her desk, possibly Monday.

She said the plan raised taxes $2.5 billion and will lead to future tax increases that will hurt the middle class.

Democratic leaders say they plan to respond to Rell later Saturday.
