OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. -- Officials in Old Saybrook said Monday that they're concerned that someone's sending out propaganda about the city's upcoming vote on property revaluation.A major referendum is slated for July 9 to vote on property revaluations, officials said, and fliers dated June 20 and phony e-mails are urging residents to vote a certain way. They said the e-mails are made to look like they're coming from the town even though they aren’t."Somebody lifted our town emblem and our banner and put out literature representing" the opposite position of the Board of Selectmen, First Selectman Michael Pace said.He said the town's emblem is shown on the Old Saybrook town Web site. He said town leaders are concerned that if enough voters get the information, which Town Hall said is bad information, it could jeopardize the referendum."For people who think this is the town's position, they may take a look and vote one way or the other," Pace said. "People have a right to their opinion."Pace added that the literature doesn't indicate who is sponsoring it.Town officials said taxpayers received them in their mailbox, which might be another violation."Again, not arguing about your right to make a statement, but make a statement and put your name on it," Pace said.Eyewitness News checked with the Secretary of the State's Office about the registration of one taxpayer group, but was told that the organization lost its registration by default in 1993.
