ENFIELD, Conn. -- Several groups have come together to demand that Enfield school officials stop holding high school graduation ceremonies at a Christian church, calling the ceremonies a violation of the separation between church and state. The American Civil Liberties Union, the Connecticut branch of the union and Americans United for Separation of Church and State sent a letter to the attorney for the town’s school district on Wednesday.“The shared American value of religious liberty is best served when the government stays out of religion,” said the attorney for the ACLU of Connecticut, David McGuire. “Regardless of intent, when Enfield Public Schools host graduation at The First Cathedral, they devalue the faith of students and families in the religious minority.”The letter encourages the school to find another venue for the graduation ceremony. The groups said that four other schools, East Hartford High School, South Windsor High School, Windsor High School and the Metropolitan Learning Center Magnet School, have been using the church for their graduation ceremonies.A message left seeking with the Enfield superintendent of schools was not immediately returned.
