Program Provides Opportunity For Continuing EdNow for the information I promised you on The Work Force Investment and Innovation ACTS (WIA):
LettersDear Ella, I just broke up with my boyfriend. The problem is he and I both work at the same company and it is very difficult for me to concentrate on my work. I love working for this company and I don't want to leave. What do you suggest?Dear What Do You Suggest? If your skills are transferable to another group within the company that you now work for, contact the heads of those departments to initiate a transfer. You can also speak to your human resources department and ask them to assist you in finding an alternate internal position. Do not discuss your personal reasons for wanting a change. Companies do not want to get involved in personal disputes, and if your skills are easily replaceable, they may just decide to terminate your employment altogether. Instead, tell them that you are interested in learning more about the company and its organization through their revolving training program (many companies provide one). If this is not available to you and there is no other place within your company to go to -- I would suggest that you and your ex sit down over coffee and discuss a workable plan that will professionally benefit the both of you. Dear Ella, I have been asked by my employer to dress more conservatively. I am a receptionist at a mortgage company in Miami. The weather is very hot here and I don't like to wear nylons or pants. I don't understand why what I wear matters from the waist down? I'm always sitting at a desk!Dear Always Sitting at a Desk! As a receptionist, you are the first person a client sees when he/she arrives at your place of business. How you dress and act impacts the image of the company for which you work. I am sure that when you were hired, you dressed appropriately or you wouldn't have gotten the job in the first place. If what you want is a job that reflects the casual lifestyle of South Florida, look for a company that offers this type of casual ambiance. Stay away from financial markets. Dear Ella, I have a small problem. When I applied for a job recently, I put down under "expected wage" that I was looking for $50,000 in an annual salary. Since submitting my application, though, I have not heard back from them and am concerned that the money I asked for was too high. How can I let them know that salary is a consideration, but the opportunity is what is important to me? Help!Dear Help! Call them. You probably spoke to human resources, so contact the person you spoke to in that department. Don't assume your salary requirements were too high -- if you know that the salary you are seeking is commensurate with the skill set you offer, there may be another reason why you have not heard back from them yet. Open dialog first, gather new information and then, if you feel that you need to redefine your salary expectations, do so. Dear Ella, Almost all the job ads I see in the paper and am applying for give a job description and a fax number to send a resume to, but they don't tell you who the company is. I would like to contact them directly first to find out more about the company so I can customize my resume to fit their environment. How do I find out who these companies are?Dear How Do I Find Out Who These Companies Are? Send a fax with a statement that reads: "I am trying to send you multiple pages, but when I send more than one page, the connection cuts off -- please advise." Include your fax number and your telephone number. Many times the company will fax you back or call you directly to give you directions on how to submit multiple pages. When they fax you, their company name will appear on their sending page and if they call you and you have caller ID (and who doesn't in this day and age), you will have their company name on your ID Box. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
