When Southington and New Britain hook up, there's usually plenty on the line.

If the Southington Blue Knights could shine Friday, they would move to a perfect 9-0. The New Britain Golden Hurricanes, meanwhile, needed a win to keep realistic playoff hopes alive.

  • Late in the fourth quarter, with Southington up 14-7, the Blue Knights set up for a field goal to put the game away.

However, New Britain rushed in, blocking the kick. No. 50 -- Damir Candzic -- picked the ball up and ran off for the touchdown, putting his Hurricanes within a point at 14-13.

Instead of kicking the extra point to tie, New Britain successfully turned the two-point conversion, putting them up by a point at 15-14 with 2:33 to go.

That gave enough time, though, to former FNF athlete of the week quarterback Paul Clements to set his team up from 3rd and 15 from the 21 with one minute left.

Culminating a 10-play drive, the ball went to Nick Florian for the touchdown and their two-point try was also good, putting Southington back on top at 22-15, which ultimately became the final score.

After the game, Southington head coach Bill Mella spoke with FNF, saying, "The one thing you really gotta do is hand it to my kids. They believe in each other, they believe in the system, they believe in our coaches, and together, they just never gave up."

With Friday night's win, Southington maintains a perfect 9-0 record.
