  • Sportscaster Brent Musburger is typically credited as the one who first used the term "March Madness" in relation to the NCAA tournament.
  • Since 1978, only six teams ranked No. 1 in at least one of the polls entering the tournament have won the championship.
  • UCLA has made the most Final Four trips with 17. Next best is North Carolina (16), Duke (14) and Kentucky (13).
  • UCLA has won the most NCAA championships (11), followed by Kentucky (7), Indiana (5), North Carolina (4) and Duke (3).

  • Cinderella: A lower-seeded team that upsets a higher-ranked team.
  • Dark Horse: A team that emerges as an unexpected contender without getting previous consideration.
  • Bracket Buster: When a team favored to advance far into the tournament suffers an upset.
  • At-Large Bid: A team that gets into the tournament by nomination of the selection committee, based on their regular-season performance.
  • Automatic Bid: A team that qualifies for the NCAA tournament by winning its conference's automatic berth.
