Want World Series Tickets? Donate Blood

Red Cross Hopes To Overcome Blood Shortage With Contest

Red Sox World Series tickets are in such high demand that some people are offering blood -- for a good cause.

People who donate blood or platelets at an American Red Cross blood drive in the Northeast beginning Monday and throughout the World Series can enter for a chance to win a pair of World Series tickets at Fenway Park. The odds are pretty long, but giving blood beats going online where tickets are selling for thousands of dollars.

"'Whatever it takes' is our attitude, but, obviously, the main reason is to come save a life, but also to have some fun and join in a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Fenway," said Paul Sullivan, CEO of the American Red Cross Connecticut Blood Services Region.

The winning name is pulled the night before the game, and the contest covers most of New England and parts of New York and Pennsylvania.

"It's a good idea (to) bring the people in," said Ron Burgoin, of Bristol.

"How much of the red sox aspect brought you out here?" Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Dan Kain asked Jerry Dugo, of Bristol.

"About 85 percent," Dugo replied.

When asked what the thinks about his chances, Dugo said "slim to none" but that it was nice to donate blood.

The Red Sox have partnered with the Red Cross for a number of years with tickets to home games.
