Calhoun In Good Condition After Bike Spill

POSTED: 9:18 pm EDT June 13, 2009

(Sports Network) - University of Connecticut men's head basketball coach Jim Calhoun is reportedly in good condition after falling and breaking five ribs during a charity bike ride.

The Hartford Courant reported Saturday that Calhoun, riding in the Jim Calhoun Cancer Challenge Ride, fell 12 miles into the 50-mile course after hitting a pothole and going over the handlebars.

However, the paper reported Calhoun got a few bike repairs and was treated for injuries and completed the final 38 miles. The Courant also said Calhoun fainted after completing the ride, which a spokesperson for the UConn Health Center attributed to dehydration and trauma from the fall.

Calhoun was reportedly taken to the UConn Health Center and informed he broke five ribs in the fall. The Courant reported Calhoun was in good condition and in great spirits, and should be released Sunday.

Calhoun said earlier this year he would return for the 2009-10 basketball season, his 24th with the Huskies. UConn went 31-5 this past season and advanced to the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament before losing to Michigan State.

Calhoun will enter his 37th year as a collegiate head coach and has 805 career wins, sixth-most all-time in Division I among men's coaches.
