Players, Family Mourn Death Of McNair

POSTED: 7:48 pm EDT July 11, 2009

(Sports Network) - Several players were among a crowd of about 5,000 who attended a Saturday memorial service for NFL quarterback Steve McNair.

McNair, who was shot to death in what Nashville police say was a murder- suicide on July 4, was laid to rest in his native Mississippi.

The Red Green Coliseum on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi was the site of a public mourning for McNair. Among those in attendance was Brett Favre, Titans head coach Jeff Fisher and quarterback Vince Young, Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis and Chicago QB Jay Cutler.

"Steve was like a hero to me," said Young. "Heroes aren't supposed to die. He inspired me a whole lot. He has helped me on every decision I have made."

Earlier this week, Nashville police said McNair's death was a result of a murder-suicide and that he was shot while sleeping by his 20-year-old girlfriend, Sahel Kazemi, at a Nashville condominium.

After the memorial service, there was a private burial for McNair, a long-time Titans quarterback who spent 13 seasons in the NFL.
