Smith Propels Shock Past Sun In OT

POSTED: 9:58 pm EDT July 11, 2009

(Sports Network) - Katie Smith poured in a game-high 25 points and hit the eventual game-winning shot with just 6.3 seconds left in overtime to lift the Detroit Shock past the Connecticut Sun, 79-77, at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Smith, who also added three rebounds and three assists, went 9-for-17 from the field and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc for the Shock, who collected their first road victory of the year after dropping the first four. Kara Braxton was a force off the bench, scoring 14 points and grabbing 13 boards for Detroit, which improved to 3-7 on the season. Alexis Hornbuckle finished with 11 points, six rebounds, and three steals off the bench for the victors.

Asjha Jones tallied 23 points and pulled down 10 boards for the Sun, who dropped to 1-3 in their last four games. Lindsay Whalen ended with 20 points, Erin Phillips had 13 points and six rebounds. Kerri Gardin finished with 12 points in defeat.

Detroit's Taj McWilliams made a critical mistake in the final stages of regulation by making just 1-of-2 shots from the line with 11.5 ticks to go. It put the Shock ahead 67-65, but Tan White made two from the charity stripe at the opposite end of the floor with two seconds left to send the contest into OT.

With the score tied at 77-77, Smith's shot found the bottom of the net with 6.3 ticks remaining in overtime. At the other end, White's first shot was blocked by Cheryl Ford while the second was off mark to end the game.
