Mets' Pelfrey Tries To End Road Woes In Washington
(Sports Network) - Mike Pelfrey will try to pick up his first road victory in almost three months this evening, when the New York Mets continue a three-game series with the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park.Pelfrey has dropped each of his last five road decisions, having not won as the guest since July 1 in Milwaukee. In 13 road starts in 2009, the right- hander is just 4-7 with a 7.00 earned run average. The 25-year-old is also coming off back-to-back home losses to Washington and Atlanta, having allowed a total of nine runs (7 earned) in that span. He is 10-12 with a 5.08 ERA on the season and 3-5 with a 3.93 ERA in 11 career starts versus the Nationals. Washington counters with 26-year-old J.D. Martin, who picked up a no-decision on Thursday versus the Dodgers after winning consecutive starts. Martin yielded five runs on six hits over just three innings against Los Angeles. The right-hander is 5-4 with a 4.71 ERA on the season and 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in two career outings versus the Mets, having beaten them on September 18 with 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball. The Nationals won the opener of this set on Monday, as Mike Morse hit a go- ahead solo homer in the sixth inning to lift his club to a 2-1 victory that snapped Washington's four-game slid. It was also just the Nats' second win in nine games. Morse homered in his third straight game and starter Ross Detwiler yielded just a run over six innings to earn his first major league victory. "It's nice for [Detwiler] to finally get a win," said Ryan Zimmerman, who plated Washington's first run with a sac fly in the first inning. He's worked hard. It's a good night for him," Mets starter Nelson Figueroa took a tough-luck loss, yielding just the two runs over six innings of work. Fernando Tatis knocked in the lone run for New York, which has lost five of seven and is just 8-18 in the month of September. New York also reached 90 losses in a season for the first time since dropping 91 games in 2004. "We left a few runners out there tonight," Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. "We have to find a way to get those hits." New York has won 10 of its 16 meetings with Washington this year, though the Nats have won four of seven from the Mets at home.
