3 Arrests Made In Jasper Howard's Death
Bloomfield Man Charged With Murder
A Bloomfield man has been charged with murder in connection with the stabbing death of a University of Connecticut football player, police said.John William Lomax, 21, was charged Tuesday in the death of Jasper Howard. His bond was set at $2 million.Hakim Muhammad and Jamal Todd have also been charged in connection with the investigation into Howard's death, police said.Todd, 21, of Hartford, was charged with falsely reporting an incident and reckless endangerment. He was released on bond and is scheduled to be arraigned on Nov. 10. Police said Todd pulled the fire alarm that emptied the Oct. 18 dance at UConn's Student Union.Muhammad, of Bloomfield, was charged with conspiracy to commit assault. His bond was set at $750,000.Howard was fatally stabbed after a school-sanctioned dance. Everyone attending the dance moved outside the Student Union after the fire alarm was pulled.Howard was laid to rest in his hometown of Miami on Monday. Among those paying their respects were the teammates of Jasper Howard, who arrived on four white buses. Each man carried a single white rose, tied with a blue ribbon, as he walked into the New Birth Baptist Church."He was the ultimate son. He was the ultimate brother. He was the ultimate teammate. He was the ultimate friend," said UConn teammate Kashif Moore. "They didn't come any better than Jazz."Howard's mother, Joanglia, visibly struggled with her emotions throughout the service, in which Howard's friends and teammates repeatedly pledged to take care of her and Howard's unborn daughter."She'll have 105 uncles, I can promise you that," Moore said.UConn football coach Randy Edsall also spoke at the funeral, asking the crowd to celebrate a life cut short."Honor his memory, as we will be doing up in Connecticut, and remember that smile. Remember that smile," Edsall said.Howard and teammate Brian Parker were stabbed after a fight broke out on campus outside the Student Union. Parker has been treated and released.Howard's teammates paid tribute to the cornerback at Saturday's game against West Virginia. Two UConn players carried his helmet and jersey before kickoff and both West Virginia and Connecticut players wore stickers on their helmets during the game.
