Eyewitness News Weekend Anchor
Heather Hegedus is a self-described “Night Owl” who says if she can get up for work at 2 a.m., anyone can! One reason Heather doesn’t mind waking up: she’s Anchor of the Weekend Morning News and loves kidding around with the show’s live guests and Meterologist Curtis Grevenitz.Heather says coming to WFSB in 2007 was a homecoming of sorts. She grew up on Boston’s North Shore, but spent time in Ct growing up – especially when her sister was an undergraduate at Yale and on road trips through the state to visit her grandparents in New Jersey. One of Heather’s first TV jobs was at the NBC News Washington Bureau in Washington, DC. Following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Heather interviewed then-Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Jordan's Queen Noor and field produced from the White House and Pentagon.Heather also worked at The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, where she was chosen by PBS Magazine to interview Mr. Lehrer about his experiences moderating years of Presidential Debates. The recovery efforts after 9/11 are one reason Heather chose to attend Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. While in New York City, she spent time behind the camera for NY1 News, shooting from Ground Zero on the first commemoration of the attacks.Heather also spent three months following a class of public assistance recipients going through the Support and Training Result in Valuable Employees (STRIVE) job training program in East Harlem, where she often found herself stepping away from her role as journalist to encourage the men and women to stay in the program. From the streets of the Big Apple, Heather suddenly found herself in the small community of Binghamton, N.Y., as the Main Anchor/Reporter at the now-defunct WIVT-TV.Heather's next job wasn't far away - in Syracuse, N.Y. – where she was Weekend Anchor and a Lead Reporter at WSYR-TV, the number one station in the market. She gained national exposure on The Weather Channel and CNN covering lake-effect snowstorms, and a Syracuse developer's plans to build the world's largest mall. Her work was included in compilations that earned the station Associated Press and Edward R. Murrow awards.Heather graduated Magna Cum Laude from Georgetown University with a degree in Government. She spent a year at the London School of Economics in England. She has a Master's of Science from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism.Heather spends her free time volunteering in the community. She also just bought her first home and she’s having fun remodeling, decorating and learning to garden --- with the help of articles in “Better Homes and Gardens”!! She’d love your home improvement tips, story ideas, photos – or just a hello! Click here to visit Heather’s Weekend Blog.
