State officials are investigating a possible case of animal neglect after several boarded horses at a private stable in Dayville were found to be malnourished.
Deborah Finco, who runs the Beech Brook Equine Rescue in Mystic, rescued one of the horses from the Dayville farm. His name is Red.
She said the tough economy strains the budget of horse owners and stables. Last year, her non-profit organization rescued 29 horses, placing 22 of them in new homes.
So far no one has been charged in connection with the case, which is under investigation by the State Department of Agriculture.
Simply Equine had no comment.
"I've got somebody who has offered to foster (Red) and take care of it while we get it back in good health," said Finco.
