Police: Father arrested for leaving toddler in car

WEST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Police arrested Geoffrey Ringer of Avon today after he allegedly left his child inside a locked car parked outside the Old Navy across from the Westfarms Mall.

West Hartford Police went to the area after they were called about reports of a child left inside a locked car.

When police arrived the father of the child was still inside the store, and when he arrived back to his vehicle he informed police that it was in fact his child in the car.

The father states that he was only in the store for a couple of minutes.

Medical experts say even on a partly cloudy day with temperatures in the upper 70s, it can still be dangerous for younger children, who cannot cool off as fast as adults, to remain in a locked car. The temperature inside a vehicle can still get into the 90s or higher very quickly.

Ringer was processed and released on a $10,000 non-surety bond on a charge of risk of injury to a minor.

He is due back in court Oct. 6.
