Alfred leaves 539K in the dark

Power outages associated with Winter Storm Alfred are skyrocketing.

Connecticut Light & Power reported more than 524,000 customers without power Saturday night, with those in the central and southwestern part of the state being hit the hardest.

Power lines were brought down in the area of Parker Street and Route 66 in Marlborough on Saturday morning, leaving 995 customers, or 37 percent of the town, in the dark. Officials said it could take hours to make repairs and get power restored.

In Monroe, 2,830 customers, or 35 percent of the town, were in the dark.

Officials at United illuminating said more than 15,000 customers were in the dark in its service area, which covers the area surrounding Bridgeport.

That brings the total number of households in the dark to 539,000.

The state Department of Transportation said that power outages along the New Haven line of Metro North is affecting service. Trains are now running hourly.
