Large sinkhole closes Route 4 in Farmington

FARMINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

Crews have been working throughout the night in Farmington to try to repair a massive sinkhole that opened up across Route 4.

A sinkhole has made it so officials had to close Route 4 in between South Road and Interstate 84.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area around the UConn Medical Center on Route 4. The right turn off exit 39 is not open to motorists.

The sinkhole, measuring 8 feet deep and 35 feet across, was reported around 1:30 p.m.

Police said the sink hole was created when maintenance work was being done on a sewer line that had collapsed.

Several different utility crews from the Regional Water Authority, the state Department of Transportation, and the town of Farmington work crews responded to the sinkhole.

"We're hoping to open up by mid-morning tomorrow around noon time, at the latest," said Russ Arnold, who works for Farmington's Department of Public Works.

Police said the roadway will probably not reopen until the morning.
