A 12-year-old boy was killed in a Christmas Day crash. It happened on Wopowog Road just after 9 p.m. Sunday.
Police said the boy, identified as Matt D'Amico by a neighbor, was a passenger in a car that was driven by his 15-year-old cousin.
They said the car collided with a tree near Brook Hill Drive. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. The 15-year-old was taken to the hospital by LifeStar.
On Monday, Matt Godwin and his son stopped by the crash site to pay their respect. They left behind a poinsettia plant and a note.
Godwin, who said Matt is a friend of his son said he saw the dead boy's father pull up to the crash site on Christmas Day around 8 p.m.
"I saw the father pull up. That's when it hit home. I ran, tried to console him, but it was too late, nothing I could do," Godwin said. "He just lost it, screaming my son, my son."
Police said Matt was in the passenger seat, his cousin behind the wheel. The cousin is in stable condition.
As the roadside memorial grew throughout the day, East Hampton Middle School students gathered at the accident scene. They said Matt was a good kid who loved dirt bikes.
No charges have been filed, but police are pointing to speed and driver inexperience. Those who drive that road said if you're not familiar with it, it could pose problems.
