SOMERS, CT (WFSB) -
A northern Connecticut town is in disbelief after a landmark for the past 150 years is no more.
The Somers Congregational United Church of Christ on Main Street was engulfed by flames Sunday night and except for a preschool in the back, is a total loss.
There has been a steady parade of curious onlookers all day to see the charred remnants of the church, which was built in 1842.
Across the street from the former church, a prayer service was held in front of Town Hall, which also had its siding melted from the intense heat from the flames.
The Somers Fire Marshal and the Connecticut State Police are investigating what caused the massive blaze.
No one was injured.
The preschool, which was located in the back of the church, was spared a lot of the damage because of a firewall.
The school will be closed for the week.
