Blumenthal, DeLauro to call for transit benefit extension

NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

United States Sen. Richard Blumenthal and United States Rep. Rosa DeLauro will join city and transportation officials at Union Station in New Haven to discuss an extension of the transit benefit.

Blumenthal and DeLauro are calling for a retroactive extension of the transit portion of the pre-tax commuter benefit and highlight the need to make the benefit permanent.

Metro-North commuters experienced increased fares in January due in part to the federal benefit returning to $125 this year, which is down from $230 in 2011, while commuters who drive saw an increase in their benefit to help pay for parking.

The press conference to discuss the transit benefit will begin at 12:30 p.m.
