EAST HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -
Eyewitness News has learned the FBI is looking into whether East Haven Police Chief Leonard Gallo used his power politically.
We are learning that the federal investigation may be more than about Latinos being mistreated.
Former East Haven Mayor April Capone was arrested right before her re-election two years ago. It involved an incident where she was trying to tell an officer not to ticket cars at the beach. The charges were dropped.
Eyewitness News has learned federal agents are looking at that incident to see if Gallo pushed for her arrest since the two had a history of problems since she took office.
Capone ended up putting Gallo on paid leave after the FBI launched its investigation in allegations that four police officers were unfairly targeting Latinos.
Eyewitness News has also learned that current Mayor Joe Maturo and Gallo have a long history of being close friends. Sources tell us the FBI briefed Maturo on their investigation explaining there were serious charges pending. But Maturo reinstated Gallo right after being sworn in.
The FBI says it has received several more complaints since the four officers were arrested last week. And they are trying to get more tips using a new email. The email address is easthavetips@ic.fbi.gov or you can call their tip line at 212-384-1000.
