Cleaners, elected officials to rally for jobs outside Hartford Courant

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Hartford Council members will be joined by dozens of workers and community allies Thursday at a rally outside the Hartford Courant office.

The rally is being held to protest Pressroom Cleaners Inc, the newspaper's new Omaha based cleaning contractor, for its refusal to hire the newspapers' long-time cleaners due to their union affiliation.

It's a violation of federal law to discriminate against workers or job applicants based on union activities.

The cleaners, some of whom had worked cleaning the Courant for more than 20 years, were let go when Pressroom Cleaners replaced a unionized cleaning contractor.

The rally is set to begin at 4 p.m. at 285 Broad St.
