MERIDEN, CT (WFSB) -

Meriden police are investigating a fatal shooting on Olive Street.

Police said they found  an unresponsive male with a gunshot wound to the chest inside a first floor apartment on Olive early Friday morning. The male was pronounced dead at the scene. He is described as a white male in his late 40s. His name is not being released at this time.

The Meriden Police Department Major Crimes Unit is currently investigating the case. It is unknown at this point if the wound was self-inflicted or caused by a third party.

The investigation is still in its early stages.

Jonathan Medina was  next door when he saw a big commotion outside.

"The police were already here going inside the house.  After that, I saw them pull a dead body out," he said.

Wilkins Pimentel who works at a nearby corner store said the man was new to the neighborhood.

"I didn't get to get too familiar with the guy.  He didn't say much," he said.
