HAMDEN, CT (WFSB) -
An 18-year-old man who fell more than 200 feet at Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden has died, according to Yale-New Haven Hospital officials.
Authorities said Tobias Engel fell 200 feet and had several broken bones, but was waving at rescuers when they found him. Other hikers heard him fall and called 911.
State officials said Engel's mother dropped him off at the park for a hike on Sunday, but around 4:30 p.m. someone heard him fall from what is called the chin, where the trail hugs the edge of a steep drop-off.
A LIFE STAR medical helicopter was initially dispatched to the scene, but later canceled and Engel was transported by ambulance to Yale-New Haven Hospital.
Engel was pronounced dead on Sunday night.
Students at Hamden High School where he attended are still coming to terms with Engel's death.
Friends say Engel wanted to go to college in Vermont, and had just received an acceptance letter to a school there the day before he died.
