Rep. Chris Murphy is expected to head to Thomaston on Monday to discuss the need for long-term bridge and road funding.
Murphy said there needs to be an extension of the federal transportation funding. The most recent six-month extension of the current highway funding will expire on March 31.
"Many of Connecticut's bridges are in dire need of repair: of the state's 5,250 bridges, 1,779 are either structurally deficient or functionally obsolete - some 34 percent," Murphy said. "Our federal highway programs are in the red because of gridlock in Washington. Our roads and bridges need critical improvements and repairs, and a full third of construction and road workers are out of work. This should be a no-brainier for Congress-we can create jobs now by making smart investments in our transportation infrastructure."
A press conference is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at the Reynolds Bridge on Waterbury Road in Thomaston.
