A homeless shelter in Torrington is seeing a record number of children needing its services.
Seven families, all with children, live at the Fish shelter.
Its executive director thinks that maybe now the shelter is finally seeing the effects of foreclosures that may have taken years to emerge.
At one point, the shelter had at least one child attending every public school in the city. The number of children staying at the shelter is so large that the shelter got a grant to build a playscape last summer with toys and swings. It's modest, but the folks at the shelter say it helps the children feel like kids.
The shelter is funded almost entirely through donations, not government grants. The director says those who have donated before may want donate again to help keep the place open.
