NORWICH, CT (WFSB) -
Connecticut State Police are investigating a shooting that took place in Norwich on Tuesday evening that occurred while officers were trying to arrest a man who was involved in an altercation at a home.
Three Norwich police officers responded to reports of a fight outside 89 Oneco Street around 8:48 p.m. and upon arriving at the home, police said they were confronted by three men who were involved in a verbal and physical altercation outside the home.
Two of the three men were arrested. Police said one of man continued to be verbally and physically aggressive, and eventually turned the aggression toward the officers.
Police said when the officer approached the man, who was later identified as 41-year-old Fernando Velasquez, he continued to be combative and never followed the commands of the officers.
The officers then tried to physically control him and attempted to handcuff him when the gun of one of the officers went off, hitting Velasquez.
Police said he continued to struggle until he was brought under control by the officers.
He was then taken to Backus Hospital in Norwich to be treated for his injuries.
Also arrested was Daniel Rivera, 20, of New London, who was charged with interfering with an officer.
After the scene of the shooting was secured by officers, the police chief and the New London State's Attorneys Office requested assistance from Connecticut State Police to investigate the shooting.
The Connecticut State Police Major Crimes Unit responded and launched an investigation.
Officials said the three Norwich officers who initially responded to the scene were all injured, and were taken to Backus Hospital to be treated as well.
Their identities were not released, and the other two men involved in the altercation were arrested and charged in the incident.
