HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -
The University of Connecticut's chapter of Students for Sensible Drug Policy will lead a rally at the state Capitol with fellow drug policy activists from across Connecticut on Thursday.
The rally is being held in an attempt to urge representatives, senators and Gov. Dannel Malloy to give marijuana reform a high priority again this coming session, which starts Wednesday.
Last year, the group helped to get decriminalization of marijuana penalties passed in the state, which resulted in expenditure reductions on police enforcement for non-violent crimes across the state, according to UConn's chapter of SSDP.
In 2007, a medical marijuana bill was passed, but was vetoed by then-Gov. Jodi Rell. Last session, a medical marijuana bill was tabled when legislators decided to prioritize the decriminalization bill over the medical bill when the session was coming to a close.
According to UConn's chapter of SSDP, Malloy previously said that he would support a bill that allowed people to smoke small amounts of marijuana for medicinal purposes.
The rally is set to kick-off at 8:30 a.m. outside the State Capitol in Hartford on Thursday.
